How to Plan out Your Workday if You Work from Home

Working from home can seem like it would offer a lot of freedom, and it often can. However, the workday can become hectic and stressful if you’re not planning it out very well. It’s important to have a good workday plan in place, even if you’re working from home. Otherwise, you can end up not getting some of your important work done, not planning enough time for everything you need to do, and feeling overwhelmed by stress and anxiety.

We want to share with you a few tips that can help to make your workday less stressful, more productive, and properly planned.

Set Your Priorities

You want to start each day by figuring out what your priorities are, determining which items need to be done for the day and which items need to be done soonest. You may have some work that has to be done that day and other work that can be spread throughout the week. Each day, you can check on your work progress and make sure you’re prioritizing the right things and getting all of the necessary work done on each project so that it will be done in a timely manner.

The priorities may shift throughout the day or throughout the week. You can keep a board or notepad near you with a list of what’s most important. You can identify the most important items by placing them at the top on a whiteboard or by placing stars on them with a pencil, and erasing them as necessary as priorities shift. You could also rank the items with numbers by them. You may want to keep the items in the same order but then rearrange the numbers that determine their priority. There are lots of different systems you can use to set priorities and change priorities as necessary, but you want to find one that works for you and keep with it.

The system you use isn’t as important as simply having a way to determine priorities for projects and then change that as necessary.

Change Focus as Needed

What you focus on at one part of the day may need to change during another part of the day. If your focus is on one project all the time, you may forget about some of the other things that you need to get done. It’s a good idea to stop every now and then and assess how you’re doing and if your focus needs to shift.

For instance, maybe you’re not making as much progress as you thought you would on a major project. It may be better for you to take a break from what you’re working on and work on something else for a little while because that other project has to get done today.

It’s important to realize that the plans you had in place for the day you may not actually work out as you thought. You may end up with a different set of work done for the day than what you initially imagined. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you need to be adaptive and be able to shift your focus when necessary so that you’re not experiencing tunnel vision and missing out on important things that need to be done.

When your focus isn’t in the right place or you are laser-focused on one thing and forgetting other things, some of the secretarial and administrative aspects of your work fall through the cracks. You may forget to send emails, make phone calls, update statuses, and do other short but important things that help you stay on track and keep things flowing for your business. Take time to reevaluate your focus periodically so you make sure that you’re working on the things you ought to be.

Give Yourself Time to Relax

Are you getting enough time to relax and recover? Do you have any time to rest during your day or is it all work, work, work? You can actually be more productive if you have some small breaks throughout the day. You want to be careful that they don’t get out of hand and you end up spending more time on break than you ought to, but you should give yourself some time to rest. You may not take the time if you don’t schedule it. 

As you are planning your day, make sure you are also planning a little time for yourself to rest. You want some time to not just rest physically but mentally as well. This will help you stay motivated and keep up your work momentum.

If you’re having trouble finding the time to rest each day, you may want to make extra time in your schedule and hire a maid for your home, get some help with some of your errands, or change up how long it takes you to do your morning routine each day.

Break up Large Projects

Large work projects can be emotionally and physically draining. If you’re spending a long time on the same thing, it can really sap your energy and make you not feel like doing anything else. It can be really helpful for some people to spread out larger work projects. Instead of trying to get a big project done in a single day, you can break it up into smaller pieces throughout the week so that it’s not as daunting. Of course, your ability to do this will depend on your deadlines and your productivity, but it’s something to keep in mind if you know you tend to feel drained from working on big projects.

Make a Schedule and Prepare to Adapt

You may want to start each day by drawing up a schedule for yourself. Or, you can make up a schedule the night before. However, that schedule doesn’t have to be immutable. You can make changes to it as necessary so that you can adapt to the events of the day. With that plan to work by, though, you can be more productive and motivated.
