Prolonged physical or mental stress is not good for the human body. Most people experience stress throughout their days, but the longer you experience it, the more damaging it can be. It can hurt your productivity at work and even affect your personal life. If you’re dealing with stress, finding different ways to de-stress and calm your mind is more important than ever.

The Mind is the Key

It’s hard to relax when you have racing thoughts. Every time you think your mind is clear, another to-do pops up, and you’re fixated. If you cannot settle your thoughts, you may not be able to fall asleep, or you can sleep all night and wake up not feeling refreshed.

The following tips may help you calm your mind after a long day at work.

Tip #1 – Go for a Walk

Going for a walk is the easiest tip for calming your mind. This works best if you walk outside, like a park, forest, or nature preserve — even a backyard or garden will do. If outside isn’t an option, walking around an indoor track or using a treadmill, if you have one, can do the trick.

Wherever you stretch your legs, try to walk for at least 20 minutes, although it’s important not to feel pressured by the time.

Walk normally and focus on your senses. Try to be fully aware or mindful of the environment as you move through it. Look for animal signs, unusual plants, and rock formations. By concentrating on these things, you may be able to take the steam out of the runaway train of thoughts in your head.

You may combine your walk with a botanical, such as low- or high-THC cannabis, or a strain with Sativa content. Or other botanical products, such as kratom and CBD, may help calm you.

Tip #2 – Aerobic Exercise

If you can’t go for a walk, treat your body (if you are able) to some fast-paced activity. It doesn’t matter what aerobic exercise you choose; make sure it’s strenuous enough to focus your mind. It should be an exercise you are familiar with and enjoy.

You don’t need a full workout, just enough to raise your heart rate. Often, 10 minutes is sufficient for most people. Afterward, do some cool-down stretches to refocus your mind.

Tip #3 – Hobbies

Hobbies can provide a creative outlet that’s free of judgment. They give you something to look forward to and distract you from your other responsibilities.

Hobbies that require concentration are best for calming your mind. You might cultivate traditional skills like knitting, cooking, or baking. Gardening is a highly effective hobby that calms the mind since it allows one to care for another living thing and uses your hand. Any hobby you enjoy is a good option if it takes your attention away from the jumble of thoughts in your head.

Tip #4 – Enjoy A Warm Cup

The simple act of preparing a warm cup of coffee or tea, and sitting down long enough to enjoy it, is enough for many people to calm their minds. Caffeinated beverages may add to your racing thoughts, so choosing something decaf or relaxing will help. Many contain botanicals like chamomile which are known to be relaxing.

Enjoy the warmth in your hands, the invigorating odor, and all other sensations as you consume it. A warm beverage can provide a very comforting and welcome distraction for the mind.

Tip #5 – Use Pressure Points

Certain places in the human body contain clusters or concentrations of nerves and/or other specialized tissue. Traditional medicine practitioners are aware of these spots or pressure points. Those who practice acupressure may use pressure points in certain therapies to address anxiety. Acupressure may stimulate the central nervous system by applying physical pressure to these points.

You don’t have to be a professional to perform acupressure on yourself. Simple techniques are easy to learn but beyond the scope of this article. You can find many demonstrations and tutorials online that may provide enough guidance to try it yourself.

Calm, Relaxed, Rested

We all value our free time — though few of us have enough. Finding ways to relax and calm the mind can make your free time healthier and more enjoyable.

Try one of these tips the next time you need to settle your thoughts and calm your mind. You might find long days at work are less of a drag, and short hours of personal time are more enjoyable.
